Why Ownership System
In systems programming, memory safety and performance have long been at odds. Rust solves these issues at compile time through its Ownership system.
Three Principles
Each value has one owner; only one owner at a time; value dropped when owner goes out of scope.
Borrow Checker
Rust ensures at compile time: either one mutable reference or multiple immutable references.
Lifetimes
Lifetime annotations ensure references are always valid.
Smart Pointers
- Box<T>: heap allocation
- Rc<T>: reference counting single-thread
- Arc<T>: atomic ref counting multi-thread
- RefCell<T>: interior mutability
Practical Case
Building lock-free data structures with Crossbeam.
Summary
Ownership system enables memory safety with C++-level performance.
