Introduction: The "Connection Dilemma" of AI Application Development

When reviewing the development history of AI technology, we find a long-standing structural problem: although large language models have made breakthroughs in understanding and generation, their connection to the external world has always been a weak link. The emergence of MCP (Model Context Protocol) is fundamentally changing this situation.

At the end of 2024, the Anthropic team officially released the MCP protocol, aiming to solve the NxM integration complexity problem between AI applications and external tools/data sources. This protocol is analogized by the industry as the USB-C interface in the AI field — a unified standardization protocol that allows any AI application to access various external capabilities in a plug-and-play manner.

I. Core Design Philosophy of MCP Protocol

1.1 Complexity Reduction from NxM to N+M

In traditional AI application integration, N AI applications need to integrate with M external tools, theoretically requiring N×M different integration solutions. MCP solves this by introducing a standardized intermediate layer, reducing complexity from N×M to N+M.

1.2 Inspired by LSP

MCP's design philosophy directly draws on the successful experience of LSP (Language Server Protocol). Just as LSP allows any editor to support any programming language through a standardized protocol, MCP allows any AI application to access any external tool, achieving the goal of "develop once, universally AI-compatible".

II. Architecture Design of MCP Protocol

2.1 Three Core Components

  • MCP Host: The AI application itself, such as Claude Desktop, IDE plugins, chatbots
  • MCP Client: Runs inside the Host, responsible for establishing connections with MCP Server
  • MCP Server: Provides specific functional implementations, such as querying databases, reading files, calling APIs

2.2 Communication Protocol

MCP defines standardized communication based on JSON-RPC 2.0, supporting multiple transport methods: stdio, HTTP+SSE, and Streamable HTTP.

2.3 Core Capabilities

  • Tools Functions AI can call
  • Resources Data sources AI can access
  • Prompts Predefined interaction templates

III. MCP vs Competitor Protocols

3.1 MCP vs Function Calling

Function Calling is OpenAI API-specific implementation; MCP is a cross-model, cross-vendor open protocol with ecosystem reuse and dynamic tool discovery.

3.2 MCP vs A2A

Google's A2A focuses on inter-Agent communication, complementary to MCP: MCP handles AI-tool interaction, A2A handles Agent-Agent collaboration.

3.3 GOSIM Hangzhou 2025

The GOSIM Hangzhou Conference featured 7 major agent communication protocols including ANP, MCP, A2A, RVP competing together for the first time.

IV. Hands-on: Building an MCP Server

Python SDK example for building a weather query MCP Server.

V. Enterprise Application Architecture

MCP supports private deployment: on-premises servers for data security, gateway proxy for auth management, and caching for performance. Alibaba Cloud HiMarket provides complete MCP Server governance.

VI. Security Design and Best Practices

Key security measures: least privilege, input validation, TLS encryption, audit logging, user confirmation for sensitive operations.

VII. Ecosystem and Future Outlook

MCP is expected to become the industry standard protocol for AI application development. Future trends include standardization, ecosystem growth, enhanced security, A2A coordination, and edge computing integration.

Summary

MCP allows AI applications to access external capabilities as easily as plugging in USB devices, marking the transition from "handicraft" era to "standardized industrial" era of AI application development.
